Scheduling for intermodal transport

Abstract: A logistics-based project is described which addresses the need for better intermodal transport, whilst balancing economic and environmental gains through the use of Internet technologies. Pipeline intermodal system to support control, expedition and scheduling (PISCES) provides an integrating platform for using these technologies in processing and sharing commercially sensitive data within transport chains (i.e. road, rail and barge). The paper demonstrates how information from an Internet-based system can be… Show more

“…The current economic environment necessitates the design and application of a framework that will ensure the provision of timely funding for the infrastructure projects with the most likelihood of meeting with success. Infrastructure such as roads, ports, airports, multimodal terminals and others are significant investments that aim to serve their regions in the long term (Kelleher et al 2003). Therefore it is vital that the private and public bodies involved have a good understanding of what will ultimately be expected of a project before they offer their approval to it.…”

“…The impact of information sharing (through the Internet) on this process has been covered by six papers: (Crowley 1998), (Lee 2002), (Kelleher, El-Rahalibi et al 2003), (Tyan, Wang et al 2003), (Rabinovich and Evers 2003) and (Vannieuwenhuyse, Gelders et al 2003). (Lee 2002) describes how information sharing can lead to a more efficient supply chain.…”

“…(Lee 2002) describes how information sharing can lead to a more efficient supply chain. (Crowley 1998), (Kelleher, El-Rahalibi et al 2003) and (Vannieuwenhuyse, Gelders et al 2003) focus on the impact of information sharing on transportation decisions such as routing and mode selection. (Rabinovich and Evers 2003) study the effects of information exchange on fulfilment activities, in particular on inventory decisions.…”
