Enterprises are highly complex systems in which one or more organizations share a definite mission, goals and objectives to offer a product or service. Thus, enterprises comprise several functions which interact with each other, such as production, marketing, sales, human resources or logistics. As a result, decision-making in the enterprise becomes a highly challenging task, and such decision process is usually separated in several levels. Nevertheless, such levels are closely related, since they share data and information. Therefore, effective integration among the different hierarchical levels, by means of tools improving information sharing and communication, may play a crucial role for the enhanced enterprise operation, and consequently for fulfilling the enterprise's goals. In order to achieve integration among the different decision levels, it is necessary to establish a common modeling framework. In this work, an ontological framework is built as the mechanism for information and knowledge models sharing for multiple applications. The potential of the general semantic framework developed (model maintenance, usability and re-usability) is demonstrated in the enterprise supply chain network design-planning problem case study presented. Further work is underway to unveil the full potential to implement a large-scale semantic web approach to support business processes decisions.

Online integration of scheduling and control is crucial to cope with process uncertainties. We propose a new online integrated method for sequential batch processes, where the integrated problem is solved to determine controller references rather than process inputs. Under a two-level feedback loop structure, the integrated problem is solved in a frequency lower than that of the control loops. To achieve the goal of computational efficiency and rescheduling stability, a moving horizon approach is developed. A reduced integrated problem in a resolving horizon is formulated, which can be solved efficiently online. Solving the reduced problem only changes a small part of the initial solution, guaranteeing rescheduling stability. The integrated method is demonstrated in a simulated case study. Under uncertainties of the control system disruption and the processing unit breakdown, the integrated method prevents a large loss in the production profit compared with the simple shifted rescheduling solution.

A simple way of rationalizing the structures of cyclic, bicyclic, and tricyclic sulfur-nitrogen species and their congeners is presented. Starting from a planar tetrasulfur tetranitride with 12π electrons, we formally derived on paper a number of heterocyclic eight-membered 10π electron species by reacting the 3p orbitals of two opposite sulfur centers with one radical each, or by replacing these centers by other atoms with five (P) or four (Si, C) valence electrons. This led to planar aromatic 10π electron systems, nonplanar bicyclic structures with a transannular S-S bond, and tricyclic structures by bridging the planar rings with an acceptor or donor unit. The final structures depend on the number of π electrons in the bridges. Intermediate biradicals are stabilized by Jahn-Teller distortion, giving transannular S-S bonds between the NSN units. This procedure may be summarized by two rules, which provide a rationale for the structures of a large number of sulfur-nitrogen-based molecules. The long bonds between the NSN units show a p character of >95 %. The qualitative results have been compared with known molecular structures and the results of B3LYP/cc-pVTZ calculations as well as CASSCF and CASVB calculations. B3LYP/cc-pVTZ calculations have also provided the UV/Vis spectra and the NICS values of the planar 10π systems.
