“…We did not find any evidence for age-related modulations of lower frequencies in the PPA. The PPA processes scene content and layout as the natural statistics of a scene explain a large proportion of its variance (Bonner and Epstein, 2021; Chaisilprungraung and Park, 2021; Dwivedi, Cichy and Roig, 2021; Aminoff and Durham, 2023). The comparable delta/theta synchronization in the PPA across age groups lends credence to the idea that older adults can adequately extract visual information that is devoid of navigational purpose.…”

“…The role of the PPA in perceiving architectural spaces was further studied in two human fMRI experiments, where it was demonstrated that the PPA and the OPA processed the borders of scenes based on the observer's space rather than the physical environment. The PPA activation was also shown to be more sensitive to changes related to mid-level perceptual characteristics of scenes (such as the rectilinear pattern of window frames) [23]. Furthermore, the PPA seems to be view-point specific [24] and primarily focuses on the perception of an immediate scene [25].…”

“…These studies demonstrate that object structures within a scene readily affect scene memory. Another fMRI study suggests that not only the spatial relations between objects within a scene affect memory, but also the task-irrelevant immediate surroundings where the observers view the scene (Chaisilprungraung & Park, 2021). The OPA processes whether a scene is viewed from outside or inside a room through windows.…”
