Scenarios Developed for Improved Sustainability of Illinois Tollway

Abstract: This paper quantifies the environmental improvements in current versus past pavement materials and construction practices employed by the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (tollway authority). Improvements in sustainability performance were measured with a life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach. Three scenarios were generated to evaluate tollway authority practices on the basis of eight 2013 Interstate reconstruction and rehabilitation projects. The first scenario, 2013 projects, analyzed the actual pavement… Show more

“…Targeting a longer design life obligates designers to mitigate a wider array of uncertain future risks, such as climate change, through their design decisions ( Hallegatte, 2009 ). Increases to the design life of roadway infrastructure, for example, have been shown to contribute to improvements in the sustainability of the project’s life cycle ( Al-Qadi et al., 2015 ).…”

“…Targeting a longer design life obligates designers to mitigate a wider array of uncertain future risks, such as climate change, through their design decisions 16 . Increases to the design life of infrastructure will generally contribute to sustainability improvements over the project's life-cycle 17 .…”

“…The sensitivity analyses in this paper were performed on a set of case studies based on eight contracts from Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA) between the years 1999 and 2013. An LCA software, developed specifically for ISTHA, was used to run the case studies with the software and original results described elsewhere (16). The case studies used in the analyses include both AC and PCC pavements as well as various reconstruction, widening, new construction, and resurfacing projects.…”
