Scenarios as springboards in design of CSCW

Abstract: Our point of departure is that the relationship between social science, cooperative working and technology is not as much a matter of differences in understanding, as it is a matter of how to accomplish change. This chapter outlines an approach to design of CSCW where change is addressed in terms of expansion of the work practice. To facilitate the change process as a process of expansion, scenarios are used as springboards. Creation and use of scenarios are supported by a conceptual toolbox. The foundation fo… Show more

“…Bødker (1998) discuss representations in design in general and several later papers have discussed the use of game pieces in room settings (e.g. Bødker and Buur 2002), scenarios (Bødker and Christiansen 1997), inspiration cards (Halskov and Dalsgaard 2006), situation cards (Mogensen and Trigg 1992)), pointing towards the importance of the materials and materiality in these creative design activities. Hartmann et al (2010) propose a setup for creative collaboration where physical and digital pictures can be combined and annotated.…”

Our current study does not explore the impact of other materials on a setup like ours.…”

“…Our prototypes have been used to provoke social innovation and to try out ideas. Accordingly, the inhabitants of the microcosm office are not seen as end users of a technology developed in an iterative design process, but as collaborators in the exploration of various hypotheses (see Bødker and Christiansen 1997).…”

“…The creative process is aided by inspiration, which comes from existing work practices (Bødker & Christiansen, 1997). New design ideas emerge in the meeting and juxtaposing of the strengths and limitation of existing ways of doing things, and the knowledge of the opportunities and risks of new ways of working -for example using computers.…”
