Scavenger Receptor Class B type 1 (SR-B1) and the modifiable risk factors of stroke

Abstract: Stroke is a devastating disease that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is either blocked or ruptured, consequently leading to deficits in neurological function. Stroke consistently ranked as one of the top causes of mortality, and with the mean age of incidence decreasing, there is renewed interest to seek novel therapeutic treatments. The Scavenger Receptor Class B type 1 (SR-B1) is a multifunctional protein found on the surface of a variety of cells. Research has found that that SR-B1 primarily functio… Show more

“…42 On a larger scale HDL-miRNAs may have an important role in RA. Critical cells for RA pathogenesis such as macrophages, B cells, T cells, RA synovial fibroblasts and others express scavenger receptor class B type 1, [43][44][45][46] which may be required for HDL-miRNA delivery. 13 Thus, more studies are needed to determine the effect of HDL-miRNA delivery on other key cells in RA and the potential for HDL-miRNA targeting for RA treatment.…”

“…Class B scavenger receptors includes the following members: SR-B1, SR-B2 and SR-B3. Structurally Class B scavenger receptors are constructed out of two transmembrane domains flanking an extracellular loop, with both the N-and C-termini located within the cytoplasm (80). Class B scavenger receptors mediate transport of cholesterol and lipids, and are involved in tumor development (34,35,81).…”

“…High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are the smallest lipoproteins and natural carriers of RNA in vivo, ferrying and delivering miRNA to cells. , Scavenger receptor type B-1 (SR-B1) is a high-affinity receptor for spherical HDLs that exhibit surface expression of apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), and it is expressed in a wide variety of cell and tissue types. , Thus, HDLs deliver miRNA with high selectivity to cells expressing SR-B1, motivating the synthesis and evaluation of HDL-mimicking particles for RNA delivery. McMahon et al pursued this concept by developing templated lipoprotein particles (TLPs) to mimic spherical HDLs .…”
