Scattering on plane waves and the double copy

Abstract: Perturbatively around flat space, the scattering amplitudes of gravity are related to those of Yang-Mills by colour-kinematic duality, under which gravitational amplitudes are obtained as the 'double copy' of the corresponding gauge theory amplitudes. We consider the question of how to extend this relationship to curved scattering backgrounds, focusing on certain 'sandwich' plane waves. We calculate the 3-point amplitudes on these backgrounds and find that a notion of double copy remains in the presence of bac… Show more

“…[10,11]. The double copy applies to tree-and loop-level amplitudes [12][13][14], as well as classical solutions [15][16][17], and extends earlier string-theory results [18]. Recent success in reformulating large families of Maxwell-Einstein (ME) [19][20][21][22][23] and Yang-Mills-Einstein (YME) supergravities [24][25][26] in the double copy language has prompted the proposal that all theories of gravity could be regarded as double copies of some sort [22] (see also [27]).…”

“…While only proven at tree-level for pure gauge theory [60], this conjecture can be applied to both massless and massive states [61,62] and has a wealth of non-trivial supporting evidence [63][64][65]. It raises the provocative question of whether exact solutions in general relativity satisfy similar simple relationships to their classical Yang-Mills counterparts, coined the classical double copy [66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80]. Such a relationship has indeed been found in the gravitational radiation emitted by spinning sources at 1PM order [81,82].…”

“…This question was first raised by the work of [8][9][10] in the context of Kerr-Schild solutions to the Einstein field equations. The Kerr-Schild double copy was further developed to more general geometries [11,12], gravitational wave backgrounds [13], and other applications [? ].…”
