Scaphocephaly: Part I

Abstract: The FSI and the OSI were more precise measuring methods than the Cranial Index for the scaphocephaly anterior posterior morphologic evaluation and follow-up. There was also a stability of the results in the long-term follow-up with the technique used. We recommend these indices for the presurgical and result evaluation rather than the Cephalic Index.

“…These cranial deformities, if not treated, can be psychologically harmful to these children, making them want to avoid social interaction because of their unusual appearance [10]. Surgeries vary from the suturectomy or synostectomies (sagittal suture removal without cranial reconstruction, performed endoscopically or not), use of springs for cranial expansion and cranial reconstruction, based on different techniques [9,10,12,13,14,16,17,18,19,20,23]. Following technical training with the craniofacial surgery group of the Hôpital Necker des Enfants Malades in Paris, France, we chose to systematically perform the Renier's ‘H' technique in all children with nonsyndromic SC aged below 8 months, and sometimes even older, in cases of mild cranial deformity.…”

“…Regarding the proposed treatment, we considered the main surgical techniques to be the synostectomies (removal only of the sagittal suture), springs and cranial reconstruction with its variants [9,10,11,12,13,14,16,17,18,19]. Only those children for whom the technique proposed by D. Renier [9] was performed were included in the final analysis.…”

“…It is the most frequent form of craniosynostosis, with an incidence in living newborns from 1/2,000 to 1/4,000 [7]. Scaphocephaly tends to be detected later than other forms of craniosynostosis.…”
