“…On macroscopic cross-sectional examination (Figure 4), various morphologies have been observed, including complete ablation of the medullary space; simple fusion of adjacent trabeculae; or a disklike, washer-shaped or annulus-shaped membrane that interrupts the medullary space. 10 Histologically, transverse lines consist of transversely oriented trabeculae spanning the medullary cavity, parallel to the provisional zone of calcification, and perpendicular to the normal, longitudinally directed trabeculae (Figures 2, B and 4). 11 Additional histologic features have been described in microscopic sections superior to, within, and inferior to distal tibia transverse lines.…”

“…Harris Lines (HL) correspond to highly mineralized transversely oriented trabeculae that can present diverse morphologies and a wide range of thicknesses (Ogden,1984; Inokuchi et al,2000; Egawa et al,2001). Visible through radiography, electron microscopy, magnetic resonance and the histological cuts of bones (Harris,1931; Mays,1995; Yao and Seeger,1997; Inokuchi et al,2000), HL form while the bone is growing but can disappear as a result of bone modeling, remodeling, and resorption (Harris,1933; Garn et al,1968b; Grolleau‐Raoux et al,1997). In paleopathology, HL are of special interest because they are one of the few markers of health status that offer a time‐depth perspective on the life of the individual/group studied (Hunt and Hatch,1981; Maat,1984; Hummert and Van Gerven,1985; Byers,1991).…”
