Scalp lesion: A presenting feature of squamous cell carcinoma of lung

Abstract: We describe a 45-year-old man, heavy smoker, presenting with 6.5 x 5.3 cm painless solitary growth over right temporal region. Chest radiograph showed opacity over left lung abutting mediastinum. “…Metastases of the scalp are mostly a late sign of advanced internal malignancies. They may also be the first visible sign of malignancy (17)(18)(19)(20)(21). “…According to gender distribution of primary tumours, we obviously found that the 100% of patients with uterus cancer (8/ 8) 64,65,84 while in 24.8% (30/121) cases, the diagnosis was synchronous. 7,8,18,20,23,31,33,35,44,46,48,56,68,69,72,73,[76][77][78]81,84,87,93,95,96,99,102,110,111 The specific sites of primary tumours in each of these subgroups were reported in Table S1 (Supporting Information). Considering cases diagnosed after the primary tumour, they were mainly derived from breast and GI cancers (18/88 cases each); synchronous cases prevalently had a GI origin (10/30 cases), while cases diagnosed before the primary tumour were only three (one from GI, namely one thyroid and one lung cancer).…”

“…Scalp metastasis as the initial manifestation of an underlying lung cancer is an exceedingly rare clinical entity. [19][20][21][22] Small-cell lung cancer accounts for 10% to 15% of all lung cancers. 23 It is characterized by an aggressive clinical course, early systemic dissemination, and increased sensitivity to chemotherapy and radiation.…”
