Scale-Space Splatting: Reforming Spacetime for Cross-Scale Exploration of Integral Measures in Molecular Dynamics

Abstract: Fig. 1: Novel representation of electrostatic interaction energy (in the middle) helps navigating the simulation by spatially resolving contributions to the integral measure traditionally represented by a timeseries (blue line in the bottom). It captures different modes of the simulation better than the timeseries and helps localizing changes in the configuration of the simulation by providing spatial context. The multiscale behaviour of the data is explored by seamlessly navigating the spatiotemporal scale-sp… Show more

“…Later, they extended this work to filter and highlight dynamic and complex paths in molecular simulations ( Alharbi et al, 2016 ). In 2020, ( Pálenik et al, 2020 ), proposed an approach based on the partial aggregation of domains to facilitate the visual exploration of multiple scales. It simultaneously allows the construction of a continuous scale space for discrete data sets and the exploration of scales in space and time.…”

“…For instance, dg2pix [42] provides an overview of large dynamic graphs using a dense pixelbased visualization to explore graph embeddings at multiple temporal scales. A notable paper is Pálenik et al [43] that proposes a pixelmap to analyze spatio-temporal particle simulations at multiple temporal and spatial scales.…”

“…Works that emphasize the broad scale of space and time over which such interaction events can occur use adjustable aggregation measures to manage spatial and temporal complexity [BTM*19; PBBH19; VS21]. Other works eschew 3D structural information entirely in favor of abstracted graphics to visualize pairwise interactions of interest [VHG*18; ZLW*21; SC21].…”
