Scale and Bristle Morphology of Mallomonas tonsurata (Synurophyceae) in Cultures with Varied Nutrient Supply*

Abstract: Scale‐bearing taxa of the chrysophytes are important paleoindicators because of their often restricted ecological requirements and their highly preserved extracellular siliceous structures. The diagnostic features can usually only be resolved using electron microscopy and, since these features are often shared between closely related taxa, identification in field studies remain uncertain in most cases. As the respective influences of genetics and environmental factors upon morphological variation cannot be eva… Show more

“…Sixteen of the landmarks (called semi-landmarks) defined outlines by being allowed to slide between two other landmarks (Bookstein 1997). The area of the dome was omitted from the analysis as a hypothesis of an independent construction mechanism was addressed by Hahn et al (1996). As the scales are symmetric objects, where left and right sides may not be discerned, we symmetrized the landmarks (Klingenberg et al 2002, Neustupa andNěmcová 2007).…”

“…In aquatic ecosystems, certain types of silicon utilizing protists are indicators of environmental factors such as pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, total phosphorus concentration, salinity, etc. (Hahn et al, 1996;Mikrjukov, 2002;Gavrilova et al, 2005;Leonov and Mylnikov, 2012;Siver, 2015;Prokina and Mylnikov, 2019;Prokina and Philippov, 2019;Lengyel et al, 2022). In addition, with an increase in the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere (Schindler, 2001;Rühland et al, 2008) in some boreal and Arctic lakes, an increase in populations of scaled chrysophytes is increasingly observed (Wolfe and Siver, 2013;Mushet et al, 2017).…”
