“…Residents are left in these moments to side for themselves on the application of evidence to variations or the primacy of surgeon individuality. Research on morbidity and mortality rounds shows that more explicit attention to practice variations and evidence is expected of surgeons and residents, 46,47 as in other specialties, 48 outside the operating room. Once inside the confines of the operating room, however, our findings suggest that residents learn to remain attuned to the role of evidence in procedural learning but only insofar as that attunement does not prevent them from enacting surgical culture's basic assumptions of autonomy and individuality.…”

“…An assessment tool for trainees based on the SBAR format has been developed for evaluation of the quality of presentation at surgical rounds, which provides information on the quality of presentations and can be used to provide objective feedback to presenters. 48 Our study provides evidence that the quality of patient handoff/communication between multidisciplinary transport team members improved after the introduction of the SBAR report to physician tool. While our study was able to demonstrate an improvement in the overall quality of information shared, we did not assess the impact this had on clinical care or outcomes such as neonatal morbidity and mortality.…”

“…Other researchers have published tools to standardise the format of presentation and hence improve the educational experience during M&M rounds 14 15. These tools generally consist of modified situational awareness aids and provide a rubric, which guides the speaker in their analysis of the case.…”
