Abstract:Over the past few years, great attention is paid to syngas production processes from different resources especially from abundant sources, such as methane. This review of the literature is intended for syngas production from methane through the dry reforming (DRM) and the steam reforming of methane (SRM). The catalyst development for DRM and SRM represents the key factor to realize a commercial application through the utilization of more efficient catalytic systems. Due to the enormous amount of published literature in this field, the current work is mainly dedicated to the most recent achievements in the metal-oxide catalyst development for DRM and SRM in the past five years. Ni-based supported catalysts are considered the most widely used catalysts for DRM and SRM, which are commercially available; hence, this review has focused on the recent advancements achieved in Ni catalysts with special focus on the various attempts to address the catalyst deactivation challenge in both DRM and SRM applications. Furthermore, other catalytic systems, including Co-based catalysts, noble metals (Pt, Rh, Ru, and Ir), and bimetallic systems have been included in this literature review to understand the observed improvements in the catalytic activities and coke suppression property of these catalysts.

TS-1/C 3 N 4 composites were prepared by calcining the precursors with cooling crystallization method and were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectrum (DRS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. The photocatalytic performance of TS-1/C 3 N 4 composites was investigated to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The results showed that all composites exhibited better photocatalytic performance than pristine TS-1 and C 3 N 4 ; TS-1/C 3 N 4 -B composite (the measured mass ratio of TS-1 to C 3 N 4 is 1:4) had best performance, with a rate constant of 0.04166 min −1 , which is about two and ten times higher than those of C 3 N 4 and TS-1, respectively. We attributed the enhanced photocatalytic performance of TC-B to the optimized heterostructure formed by TS-1 and C 3 N 4 with proper proportion. From the results of photoluminescence spectra (PL) and the enhanced photocurrent, it is concluded that photogenerated electrons and holes were separated more effectively in TS-1/C 3 N 4 composites. The contribution of the three main active species for photocatalytic degradation followed a decreasing order of ·O 2 − , ·OH and h + . The degradation products of RhB were identified by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways were proposed.

Dry reforming of methane was studied over Ni,Y-promoted KIT-6 ordered mesoporous silicas, prepared by incipient impregnation (nickel content 12 wt.%, yttrium content of 4 wt.%, 8 wt.% or 12 wt.%). The catalysts were characterized by XRF, FT-IR, TGA/DSC-MS, N2-adsorption, TEM, HRTEM, XRD and TPR-H2. The promotion with 8 wt.% Y (Y/Si=0.05) resulted in the highest activity and H2/CO molar ratio closer to the stoichiometric value at temperatures from 600 to 750°C. The characterization results of the yttrium promoted materials showed higher reducibility of the bulk NiO, bigger Ni crystallite size after reduction and DRM test, and better dispersion of nickel in the channels of the KIT-6 support. Additionally, larger Ni particles were observed on the external surface of the support, which may be related to catalytic selectivity towards carbon forming reactions. Upon dry methane reforming the segregated phases of Niº, Y2O3, and possibly Y2Si2O7 were registered. No presence of a Ni,Y alloy was observed.
