John Weever (1575/76–1632), satirist, poet, epigrammist, and antiquarian, is primarily remembered for
Ancient funerall monuments
(1631), an 871‐page work cataloguing ancient, medieval, and contemporary epitaphs. Since many of these physical epitaphs have been lost, Weever's transcriptions and commentaries have proved invaluable to scholars. Weever is also known for his satirical verses: he published five books of epigrams and satires, and attempted to follow the model of his lauded mentor Ben Jonson, although his efforts in this regard were ridiculed by his contemporaries.
