SAXS Combined with UV-vis Spectroscopy and QELS: Accurate Characterization of Silver Sols Synthesized in Polymer Matrices

Abstract: The present work demonstrates a validation of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) combining with ultra violet and visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) analysis for characterization of silver sols synthesized in polymer matrices. Polymer matrix internal structure and polymer chemical nature actually controlled the sol size characteristics. It was shown that for precise analysis of nanoparticle size distribution these techniques should be used simultaneously. All applied method… Show more

“…Obviously, the diminished distance between AgNPs in the collapsed polymer matrix above LCST takes place. Using the PRIMUS program from the ATSAS package [28,29], we calculated the distance distribution functions (DDFs) for each temperature ( Figure 5). All DDFs have two peaks-at 5.9 nm and 23.5 nm.…”

“…However, for relatively small particles, all the aforementioned methods were in good agreement for the evaluation of the particle size and polydispersity. 49 In the case of Ag-Cu alloy NPs synthesized using Cu-and Ag-nitrates in water with hydrazine as the reductant and starch as the sol-stabilizing agent, SAXS demonstrated the formation of mass fractal aggregates. A bimodal size distribution was noticed, with the smaller aggregates having Ag-rich compositions, while larger aggregates with low mass fractal dimensions were Cu-rich.…”

“…Furthermore, the characteristic peak at 1670 cm −1 that presented in all hydrogels was by reason of the hydrazone bonds formed between ODex and HA-ADH via the Schiff base [ 31 ]. In Figure 1 B, a distinct absorption peak was discovered at ~417 nm, which contributed to the plasmon resonance absorption peak of the AgNPs [ 32 ], demonstrating that silver nitrate was reduced to AgNPs by chitosan successfully, and loaded onto the hydrogel.…”
