SAW sensors for direct and remote measurement

Abstract: SAW devices have been shown to be suitable not only for signal processing but also for sensor applications. Beginning with the early seventies of the last century, SAW sensors have been under investigation for several decades. The physical effect of a change of the elastic constants of the substrate material or a change in the mass loading under the influence of changing conditions in the environment, lead to a change in the phase velocity of the surface acoustic wave and commonly to a frequency shift in the S… Show more

“…Environmental conditions influenced the physical parameters of the piezoelectric layer, such as conductivity, stiffness, mass density, and dielectric constant, which in turn influenced the phase velocity and caused a frequency shift. 25,26 The change of SAW velocity is expressed as follows: 27…”

“…It is also mainly used in SAW devices for sensing the environmental influence. A SAW device consists of a piezoelectric substrate with metallic structures, which are called interdigital transducers (IDTs), on its plain-polished surface [1]. IDTs are overlapping metallic finger structures, which are fabricated by a photolithographic process.…”

“…Recently, EPS is making inroads into the marketplace and increasingly applied due to several its advantages, such as fuel consumption and logistical benefits. [1] Torque sensor is an inherent part of an EPS system of a vehicle. A torque sensor is an inherent part of an EPS system and it is significant for controller to control the amount of steering assistance with the measurement of the steering torque and the steering direction.…”

“…Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors are small, robust, passive and wireless devices that do not require any embedded electronics [ 1 ]. This presents numerous advantages, for a wide range of applications [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. They are, in particular, well-suited for applications in extreme environment [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
