Opinion statement Informal caregivers invest a significant amount of time and effort to provide cancer patients with physical, psychological, information, and social support. These challenging tasks can harm their own health and well-being, while a series of social-ecological factors may also influence the outcomes of cancer caregiving. Several instruments have been developed to help clinicians and researchers understand the multi-dimensional needs and concerns of caregivers. A growing body of evidence indicates that supportive interventions including psychoeducation, skills training, and therapeutic counseling can help improve the burden, information needs, coping strategies, physical functioning, psychological well-being, and quality of life of caregivers. However, there is difficulty in translating research evidence into practice. For instance, some supportive interventions tested in clinical trial settings are regarded as inconsistent with the actual needs of caregivers. Other significant considerations are the lack of well-trained interdisciplinary teams for supportive care provision and insufficient funding. Future research should include indicators that can attract decision-makers and funders, such as improving the efficient utilization of health care services and satisfaction of caregivers. It is also important for researchers to work closely with key stakeholders, to facilitate evidence dissemination and implementation, to benefit caregivers and the patient.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the intrapersonal and interpersonal effects of three personality traits-neuroticism, extraversion and conscientiousness-on depression and examine whether acceptance of illness mediates the actor and partner effects in advanced lung cancer patients and caregivers using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model (APIMeM).Methods: A total of 304 dyads of advanced lung cancer patients and caregivers were studied. Personality traits, acceptance of illness and depression were measured using 44-item Big Five Inventory, the Acceptance of Illness (AIS) scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Results:The APIMeMs suggested that there were significant actor-actor effects of the three personality traits on depression through their own acceptance of illness.Additionally, significant actor-partner effects of neuroticism and extraversion on depression were also found. Specifically, patients' neuroticism was negatively related to their own acceptance of illness, which increased caregivers' depression, and caregivers' higher extraversion was related to their own higher acceptance of illness, which reduced patients' depression. Furthermore, a significant partner-actor effect was only found in the neuroticism model. Patients' neuroticism was negatively related to caregivers' acceptance of illness, which increased caregivers' depression. Conclusion:The three personality traits had both interpersonal and intrapersonal effects on depression in advanced lung cancer patient-caregiver dyads, and acceptance of illness played an important mediating role in these relationships.

A témában megjelenő friss kutatási eredmények összefoglalásával arra kerestük a választ, hogy a pozitív élmények feldolgozása (savoring) milyen jelentőséggel bír a daganatos megbetegedések komplex terápiájában. Az eredmények azt mutatják, hogy a savoring nem csak a boldog élet egyik nélkülözhetetlen összetevője. Azokban a stresszel teli időszakokban is fontos erőforrásként szolgálhat - mind a páciens, mind pedig az őt ápoló hozzátartozók életében is -, mint amilyet az életet veszélyeztető, daganatos betegségek is jelentenek. A pozitív tapasztalások „ízlelgetése" képes csökkenteni a megbetegedéssel kapcsolatos szorongásos és depresszív tüneteket, az érzelmi distresszt, valamint növelni a pozitív érzelmi állapotot, és az élettel és párkapcsolattal való elégedettséget is. Az említésre kerülő eredmények, valamint savoring intervenciós lehetőségek akár a hazai onkopszichológiai ellátás területén is új színfoltot jelenthetnek.By reviewing the results of recent researches we aimed to highlight the importance of savoring in the complex therapy of cancer. These results show that savoring is not only an essential component of a happy life, but it can also be an important resource in stressful periods and serious illness as the life-threatening cancer, both for the patient and for his relatives and caregivers. Savoring can reduce, among others, illness-related anxiety, depression, emotional distress and increase positive emotional and life satisfaction as well as relationship satisfaction. The mentioned results, as well as the potential of savoring interventions, may represent a new approach in the field of Hungarian oncopsychological care as well.
