Savings in Location Management Costs Leveraging User Statistics

Abstract: The growth in the number of users in mobile communications networks and the rise in the traffic generated by each user, are responsible for the increasing importance of Mobility Management. Within Mobility Management, the main objective of Location Management is to enable the roaming of the user in the coverage area. In this paper, we analyze the savings in Location Management costs obtained leveraging the users' statistics, in comparison with the classical strategy. In particular, we introduce two novel algor… Show more

“…In other words, SI will provide us with an indication of the granularity in the location information that the system has about the user, which will be very helpful for the network operators to optimize the Location Management procedures [2][3][4][5][6]. We have inferred the mathematical definition of the SI from the results obtained analyzing multiple cases:…”

“…Within Mobility Management, Location Management enables the roaming of the user in the coverage area, with the main tasks involved being location update and paging [1][2]. The location update procedure consists of informing the network about every new location the mobile terminal enters, while paging is employed by the network to deliver incoming calls to the user.…”
