Saving the Uterus; Our Experience in Uterine Artery Embolization for Acquired Uterine Vascular Abnormalities

Abstract: Background: Acquired uterine vascular abnormalities are a rare cause of potentially life-threatening bleeding. These include uterine artery pseudoaneurysms (UAP)and acquired arteriovenous malformations. The objective of this study was to describe our experience with the diagnosis of acquired uterine vascular abnormalities and its treatment with uterine preservation. It was a retrospective cohort study. Methods: Eight patients were enrolled from the hospital database who presented to our Interventional Radiolog… Show more

“…It also prolongs the procedure and increases the utilization of contrast agents, thereby escalating the procedural risks [ 5 9 ]. These challenges lie in accessing the distal cortical arteries, which are crucial for treating various lesions and diseases in that region, including aneurysms [ 10 12 ], arteriovenous malformations [ 13 , 14 ], liver tumors [ 15 , 16 ], vascular tumors [ 17 ], and bleeding control [ 18 20 ]. Please refer to Table S1 for current limitations for these diseases.…”

“…There is a scarcity of data concerning the optimal management of AVM; historically, uterine artery embolization (UAE) is commonly regarded as a first-line treatment [ 11 , 12 ]. A key advantage of UAE is that it effectively resolves AVM while preserving the uterus; however, it also has several drawbacks, such as being costly, invasive, and not universally available since it requires hospitalization.…”
