“…This should not be taken for granted, given the considerable resourcing pressures faced by most units. Recent initiatives at some teaching hospitals to introduce pop-up alerts on adrenal patient hospital records about the time-critical nature of emergency medical treatment and administration of glucocorticoid doses will undoubtedly assist in this respect [38]. A further promising safety initiative has been for direct ambulance registration of steroid-dependent patients by home address, with registration being arranged by their treating hospital [39].…”

Electronic medical records (EMR) may be used to flag patients with known or at high risk for AI to increase provider attention 32 33…”

“…3 At a local level, we have developed an electronic record-based steroid alert system for Newcastle-upon-Tyne hospitals. 4 Nevertheless, steroid-dependent individuals remain a vulnerable patient group. The potential for damaging delays in "prehospital" emergency treatment is a concerning gap in the interlocking safety measures being developed to prevent serious clinical incidents.…”

“…We have established a hospital-initiated ambulance registration pathway for steroid-dependent patients attending endocrinology clinics in Newcastle-upon-Tyne NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust. Using a patient database established when we set up electronic record alerts for this same group of patients, 4 we have identified patients attending endocrinology clinics with primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency. We received local Caldicott approval to share patient demographic information securely and directly (using nhs.net email) with the North East or the North West Ambulance Services, depending on the patient's postcode, to register them at their home addresses as being steroid-dependent.…”
