Save our soil from heavy metals (Pb and Cd) accumulation for rice growth

Abstract: Rice intensification has been very successful in Indonesia and was even appreciated by FAO in 1985. However, despite the success, paddy soils are frequently polluted with Pb and Cd which are mostly derived from phosphate (P) fertilizers. Considering that the soils have been used for the long-term cultivation, Pb and Cd contents both in the soil and rice have exceeded the tolerance level in food as defined by WHO namely 2 and 0.24 mg kg-1, respectively. The highest Pb and Cd were found in soils cultivated for 8… Show more

“…P fertilizer derived from natural phosphate or SP-36/TSP can also increase the Cd content in the soil. The metal content of Cd in phosphate fertilizer ranges from 0.1 -170 mg kg -1 , SP-36 fertilizer contains 11 mg kg -1 of Cd, and manure contains 0.1 -0.8 mg kg -1 of Cd [24,25]. Biogas waste used for agricultural land also contains Cd; the Cd content in a slurry or biogas liquid waste from cattle farms is 57.69 µg/L and 19.62 µg/L in sewage [22,26].…”

“…Organic matter is vital as a regulating agent for heavy metal mobility in the soil [6]. Furthermore, Pb and Cd can form complex and chelate compounds with organic materials [7]. The complex form is a reaction between metal ions and ligands through electron pairs [8].…”

“…Lead (Pb) is known as being neither essential nor beneficial for any living organisms and is detrimental to plant growth, and productivity. Lead (Pb) can be found in chemical fertilizers and pesticide ingredients widely used in Indonesia, making it possible to accumulate in plants (Budianta et al 2022). Its accumulation in the soil can reduce productivity and retard the growth of crops.…”
