Saturation in heteronuclear photoassociation of6Li7Li

Abstract: We report heteronuclear photoassociation spectroscopy in a mixture of magneto-optically trapped 6 Li and 7 Li. The laser-induced decrease in the 7 Li steady-state particle number, only appearing in the presence of 6 Li, gives clear evidence of photoassociation to form 6 Li 7 Li. Hyperfine resolved spectra of the vibrational level v = 83 of the singlet state A 1 Σ + u have been taken up to intensities of 1000 W/cm 2 . The absolute resonance frequencies and the rotational constant have been measured. Saturation … Show more

“…For T 600 nK, K u p 2:5 10 ÿ8 cm 3 s ÿ1 , in good agreement with the full theoretical calculation and experiment. The saturation observed in previous experiments [22,23] is consistent with the unitarity limit, although at rates many orders of magnitude lower than observed here. It is interesting to speculate on how our results relate to the other proposed saturation mechanisms.…”

“…Saturation was not observed in this experiment. Saturation was observed in two other lower precision experiments [22,23], but these experiments were performed in a magneto-optical trap, where the temperatures were greater than 100 K and the corresponding unitaritylimited rates were quite small, of the order of 1 s ÿ1 or less.We report precise measurements of both the rate of PA and the spectral shift in a quantum degenerate gas of 7 Li atoms as a function of laser intensity. The rate is observed to saturate at the highest intensities, where the corresponding rate constants are nearly 2 orders of magnitude larger than any previously measured.…”

“…As an alternative to Feshbach resonances, photoassociation is used to transform atomic pairs into molecules. Photoassociation has been extensively investigated for the homonuclear case [12], and there are already examples of successful heteronuclear photoassociation [13,14,15]. The advantage of photoassociation is the possibility to form molecules also in deeper lying bound states [16], where the internuclear distance is drastically reduced and the molecules behave more like composite particles with a well defined quantum statistics.…”

“…In fact, fulfillment of exactly such conditions have enabled experimental demonstrations of Rabi oscillations in PA [18,19]. Saturation effects in PA have also been studied experimentally by many groups [56][57][58].…”
