Satellite Climate Data Records: Development, Applications, and Societal Benefits

Abstract: This review paper discusses how to develop, produce, sustain, and serve satellite climate data records (CDRs) in the context of transitioning research to operation (R2O). Requirements and critical procedures of producing various CDRs, including Fundamental CDRs (FCDRs), Thematic CDRs (TCDRs), Interim CDRs (ICDRs), and climate information records (CIRs) are discussed in detail, including radiance/reflectance and the essential climate variables (ECVs) of land, ocean, and atmosphere. Major international CDR initi… Show more

“…Many studies used the SPEs in their works on water balance analyses, water resource management, hydrological simulation, and disaster forecasting (W Yang et al, 2016). However, basin-scale assessments of SPEs is the process necessary for their widely operational applications, as the inherent biases and indeterminate errors of them can be propagated or even amplified through the applied integration processes and thus result in poor results (J Su et al, 2017;J Su et al, 2019).…”

“…A crude distinction is by upstream, midstream and downstream services. Upstream climate services involve the reprocessing and fusion of (different) observational data, as well as development and application of various types of climate models and reanalysis products [29,30]. The EQC projects/efforts are currently concentrating on the upstream for the ECV climate data records (CDRs).…”

“…global grids of sea surface temperature or monthly precipitation). Finally, when FCDRs or TCDRs are regularly updated, with near-real time observations, Interim Climate data Records (ICDR) are generated CGMS 2014, 2017;Hollmann et al 2013;Su et al 2018;Yang et al 2016;Zeng et al 2015).…”
