Satellite and Mobile Wireless Transmission of Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma

Abstract: Accuracy correlated with clarity. Roaming vest transmission of FAST provides interpretable, diagnostic imagery at the distances used in this study. VSAT provided the best clarity and diagnostic value with the lighter, more portable INMARSAT serving a lesser role for remote clinical interpretation. LifeLink performed well, and further infrastructure improvements may increase clarity and accuracy.

“…In the latter study, images were obtained at a military combat-support field hospital and transmitted from the ultrasound machine to the satellite using a wireless radio transmitter contained in a tactical vest. A similar setup was tested by the U.S. Army Support Hospital for use on a moving ambulance, and the "roaming vest" transmission method provided adequate and interpretable images to be transmitted remotely (35).…”

“…A similar setup was tested by the US Army Support Hospital for use on a moving ambulance. In that feasibility study a "roaming vest" transmission method showed promise in transmitting adequate and interpretable images remotely [65]. In another model, 12 patients with known structural heart disease were scanned remotely with satellite transmission of the images.…”

“…Adhikart et al [61] demonstrated that video data can be sent via commercially available cellular telephones over a distance of >150 miles, in less than 90s. As a result, appropriately trained image interpreters can be located in an area away from the disaster, potentially improving organization of triage or care efforts [17,55,[63][64][65].…”
