SARS-CoV-2: From the pathogenesis to potential anti-viral treatments

Abstract: Introduction The world is witnessing the spread of one of the members of Coronaviruses (CoVs) family, called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the 21st century. Considering the short time spent after its prevalence, limited information is known about the effect of the virus mechanism on different organs of the body; meanwhile the lack of specific treatment and vaccine for this virus has exposed millions of people to a big challenge. Areas covered … Show more

“…Since December 2019, COVID-19 has been a resident of the world. Early efforts ranged from the development of diagnostic assays [80][81][82][83] and specific therapeutics [84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102] to optimizing health monitoring [103,104]. Despite this effort, in addition to our knowledge and experience from the recent outbreaks [105], it mainly relied on non-pharmacological interventions to control the pandemic, e.g., quarantine and social isolation [106,107].…”

“…Depending on the risk factors presented by SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, the infection may cause an acute respiratory distress syndrome, and multiple organ failure, which can be fatal. To prevent and/or cure COVID-19, the vaccine strategy seems the most promising approach whereas conventional drugs can provide potential alternative treatments as adjuvants [ 91 , 92 ]. These alternative approaches using drugs acting on the viral cycle and/or on the cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 should not be neglected.…”

“…It combines closely with RdRp and is a powerful antiviral drug against SARS-CoV-2 (Elfiky, 2020b). Clinical trials about the treatment of ribavirin on the patient with COVID-19 have been conducted (Zarandi et al, 2021).…”
