Sarcopenia in Ovarian Cancer Patients, Oncologic Outcomes Revealing the Importance of Clinical Nutrition: Review of Literature

Abstract: Introduction:Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological malignancies. Its usual clinical manifestation is at advanced stages, with nutritional impairment, weight loss, and a consequent decline in skeletal muscle mass and strength (defined as sarcopenia). The relationship between sarcopenia and decreased survival was demonstrated not only in ovarian cancer but also in other cancer types, such as hepatocellular, pancreatic, lung, colon, cervical, metastatic breast, and renal cancer. “…Together with skeletal muscle quality, they have been proposed to be used as predictors for postoperative complication and early mortality in patients with gynecological cancer ( 36 ). In addition, a recent review shows that sarcopenia appears to play an important role in the oncological outcomes of ovarian cancer patients ( 37 ). Therefore, interaction between TPN and sarcopenia in gynecological cancer would be an interesting direction for future studies.…”
