Sarcopenia: an overview

Abstract: Sarcopenia, the age-dependent loss of muscle mass and function, is a common condition among older adults, and is associated with several adverse health outcomes. Owing to the impact of sarcopenia on quality of life, disability and mortality, a greater awareness is necessary in order to correctly identify the condition both in community and geriatric settings. Research on sarcopenia prevention and treatment is developing quickly, but many questions are still unanswered. The core of the sarcopenia condition invo… Show more

“…Regarding the possible therapeutic options for sarcopenia, the primary intervention should be physical exercise . The advantages of exercise have been demonstrated convincingly and resistance exercise training was shown to increase muscle mass and strength, improving muscle protein accretion .…”

“…Furthermore, Janssen et al (2004) concluded that a 10% reduction in the prevalence of sarcopenia could result in a savings of $1.1 billion per year, substantiating the need for interventions aimed at combating sarcopenia. Factors contributing to sarcopenia include changes in muscle biology, oxidative stress, satellite cell function, hormonal regulation, nutrition, and physical activity (Cruz-Jentoft et al, 2014Karakelides & Nair, 2005;Marzetti et al, 2017). From a healthy aging perspective, lifestyle interventions which decrease sarcopenia are clinically significant.…”

“…The main approaches to treatment of sarcopenia are progressive resistance exercise and optimization of dietary protein intake [20], [21]. As treating sarcopenia is likely to improve patients' SARC-F score, it can be hypothesized that allied health intervention that specifically aims to maximize patients' mobility and independence in performing daily tasks may improve quality of life.…”
