Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung: a rare histological subtype of non-small cell lung cancer with a poor prognosis even at earlier tumour stages

“… 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 Spindle cell carcinoma is a rare subclassification of sarcomatoid carcinoma. 10 Moreover, sarcomatoid carcinoma only accounts for ∼0.1% to 0.4% of all non–small-cell lung cancer cases. 10 In a thorough review of the reported data, we did not find any recent reports of a diagnosis of spindle cell lung carcinoma after an acute mesenteric ischemic event.…”

“…Although sharing some driver mutations, compared with other NSCLC types, patients with PSC have a more aggressive clinical course and a poorer prognosis, even at earlier tumor stages, with a median survival of 9–12 months in patients with complete tumor resection 11 . PSC patients usually show an unsatisfying response to systemic chemotherapeutical drugs and, currently, there are no efficient therapies 11 .…”

“…In this study, we reported a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma occurring in the lung. Compared to other types of lung cancer, pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma has a worse overall survival [ 15 ]. Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma is characterized by frequent gene mutations.…”
