“…These findings support the hypothesis that a variety of environmental exposures, including those generated by the destruction of the World Trade Center, may cause sarcoidosis or sarcoid like granulomatous pulmonary disease. The fact that similar findings have been reported by two other cohort studies, FDNY and the WTC Registry [Jordan et al, 2008] provide additional evidence in support of this hypothesis. Further scientific study is needed to understand the geneticenvironmental interactions that may be responsible for the apparent relationship between WTC exposure and sarcoid like granulomatous disease.…”

“…[5] In the latter study, the incidence rate was highest in the first post-9/11 year (86/100,000), but decreased over the next 4 years to compare favorably with the age-adjusted rate we report: 22/100,000 vs. 25.4/100,000 in the current study. This rate is also similar to the annual incidence of 23.1/100,000 in white males reported by the WTC non-FDNY responder cohort.…”

“…To date, two of the three major cohorts of WTC-exposed rescue/recovery workers have reported “greater than expected” numbers of post-9/11 cases of sarcoidosis[3, 4] while the third reported an elevated sarcoidosis risk among specific WTC-exposed workers. [5]…”

“…2 Nonetheless, a case-control study using World Trade Center Health Registry data found that working on the World Trade Center debris pile was associated with a significantly higher odds of sarcoidosis. 3 Because both cases and controls in that study underwent similar observation, surveillance bias should be limited.…”
