A phytoremediation process for lead (Pb) under laboratory conditions on contaminated soil from the Puchuncaví commune, Valparaíso Province, Chile, was carried out. It analyzed the phytoremediation potential of Sarcocornia neei (Lag.) M.A. Alonso and M.B. Crespo. The plants were propagated beforehand and extracted from the El Yali wetland, a RAMSAR 878 site in Valparaíso. Soil fertility and heavy metal concentration analyses of composite samples were conducted, complying with established protocols and standard methodology for chemical and metal analyses. These analyses were conducted in the Soil Analysis Laboratory of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. The aim was to analyse not only the tissue of plants from both areas but also the soil to identify the changes in different conditions in which the plants live. To determine the type of inferential analysis to be performed, a normality test was applied; however, it was deemed unsuitable, and therefore, the contrasts were developed using nonparametric tests, particularly Wilcoxon. R project software was used in the tests, especially the RCommander package, together with the Jamovi free-license statistical spreadsheet application. The analyses results of the soil samples indicated high concentrations of heavy metals, predominantly Pb at a concentration of 77.97 mg/kg, acidic soil indicated by pH between 5.77 and 6.38, low levels of electrical conductivity, and the presence of organic matter. A phytoremediation efficiency of 99% on soil samples was achieved. Preliminary results were compared against international regulations on the concentration of metals in soil. The histological sections showed that individual plants probably adapted to their environmental conditions.

Background. The aim of the study was to find out the influence of excess copper and zinc ions in drinking water on the bile-forming and bile-secreting functions of the liver in the conditions of mechanical trauma and the effectiveness of the antidote therapy. Material and methods. The experiments were performed on 60 Wistar strain male rats weighing 180-200 g. There were 3 groups of experimental animals in the experiment: 1 group -only skeletal trauma was simulated; 2 group -a skeletal injury was simulated and zinc and copper salts were administered; 3 group -skeletal trauma + zinc and copper salts followed by Unithiol treatment. Results. In the late period of traumatic illness (14-28 days), after a severe skeletal injury, the intensity of bromsulfalein increased in the liver tissue, and there were signs of increased formation of direct bilirubin in terms of additional intake of copper and zinc ions. The animals with severe skeletal trauma were accompanied by a significant deterioration in the functional state of the liver in comparison to the animals with similar skeletal trauma without additional intoxication. Conclusions. Under conditions of additional intake of copper and zinc ions (in the 2nd group), after 14 days and 28 days of observation, all the studied indicators are much higher than in the group of the animals without additional intoxication with these ions. The use of Unithiol reduced the toxic effect of copper and zinc ions on the studied indicators of the functional state of the liver both in the early and late period of the traumatic disease.

Los humedales representan una transición entre un ambiente terrestre y acuático, constituyéndose como uno de los sistemas naturales más importantes debido a sus múltiples funciones; no obstante, a pesar de su importancia, representan uno de los ecosistemas más vulnerables. Los humedales de la costa de la región de Coquimbo-Chile configuran un sistema dinámico con gran presencia de biodiversidad en un área con predominio semi-árido. En este contexto, resulta importante acercarse a un mayor conocimiento de estos sistemas con el fin de promover su conservación y/o restauración, siendo una fundamental herramienta las experiencias educativas. Objetivo. Determinar cómo es percibido el futuro del humedal “El Culebrón” por estudiantes de enseñanza media a través del desarrollo de escenarios cualitativos. Materiales y métodos. Se generó inicialmente un conjunto de escenarios a partir de una proyección de 10 años, los cuales fueron reinterpretados mediante el software NVIVO9. Resultados. El análisis permitió diferenciar cuatro escenarios: “responsabilidad social”, “cambio climático”, “crecimiento de lo natural” y “urbanización”. Conclusiones. Se puede inferir un futuro amenazante de los humedales desde la perspectiva percibida por los estudiantes debido a la interacción de impulsores de cambio indirectos, entre los que se destacan elementos naturales (cambio climático y eventos extremos) cambios demográficos (urbanización) y culturales (conciencia ambiental precaria o insuficiente).
