Saqqar: A 34 km diameter impact structure in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Here we present the first proof of an impact origin for the Saqqar circular structure in northwestern Saudi Arabia (Neville et al. 2014), with an apparent diameter of 34 km, centered at 29°35 0 N, 38°42 0 E. The structure is formed in Cambrian-Devonian siliciclastics and is unconformably overlain by undeformed Cretaceous and Paleogene sediments. The age of impact is not well constrained and lies somewhere between 410 and 70 Ma. The subsurface structure is constrained by 2-D reflection seismic profiles and six … Show more

“…The Saqqar impact structure that was discovered this year (Kenkmann et al. ) has not been entered into the database yet. Among 189 known impact structures in total, 133 are exposed; of these 77 impact structures are unambiguously associated with shatter cones (which is actually less than the preliminary estimation of Ferrière and Osinski ).…”

“…; Reimold and Koeberl ; Kenkmann et al. ). A systematic search program for impact structures has been conducted in Morocco since 2010, using the satellite imagery available through the Google Earth software, to identify and select circular features to be visited for ground study and sampling to confirm or disprove the possibility of an impact origin (Chaabout et al.…”
