SummaryDurian fruit rinds (Durio zibethinus) have increasingly attracted scientific interest due to their potent bioactive metabolites. In the present study, a comprehensive approach combining chromatographic techniques and bioassays was employed to elucidate the phytochemical constituents present in durian fruit rinds and their corresponding bioactivities. The crude ethanolic extract (CEE) and its fractions obtained through silica gel column chromatography (F1, F2, F3, and F4) were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed for their flavonoid profiles using thin‐layer chromatography, high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Among the tested samples, fraction F2 exhibited the highest total flavonoid content (179.55 mg QE/g DW). TLC and HPLC analyses showed the presence of quercetin in all tested samples, with its content ranking in the order of F2 > F3 > F1 > F4 > CEE. The fractions exhibited inhibitory effects on albumin denaturation, protease activity, lipoxygenase (LOX), heat‐induced haemolysis, and xanthine oxidase (XO), surpassing those of the crude extract. These observed bioactivities correlated with the distribution of flavonoids and quercetin content in the samples. LC/MS analysis further showed the presence of flavonoids‐chalcone, flavonols, terpenoids, stilbene glycosides, anthocyanins, phenolics, and amino acids in fraction F2. These results determine the phytochemical profiles, anti‐inflammatory, and anti‐XO activities of bioactive fraction obtained from durian fruit rinds.

Introduction Chromatography and spectroscopy are nowadays well‐validated techniques allowing to isolate and purify different class of natural products from the genus Codonopsis. Several categories of phytochemicals with drug like properties have been selectively extracted, isolated, characterised by this methodology. Objectives The present review aims to provide up‐to‐date and comprehensive information on the chromatography, phytochemistry and pharmacology of natural products of Codonopsis with an emphasis on the search for natural products having various biological activities and the semi‐synthetic derivatives of bioactive ones and to highlight current gaps in knowledge. Materials and methods A literature search was performed in the SciFinder Scholar, PubMed, Medline, and Scopus databases. Results During the period covered in this review, several classes of compounds have been reported from genus Codonopsis. Codonopsis pilosula and Codonopsis lanceolata are the most popular in the genus especially as per phytochemical and bioactive studies. Phytochemical investigation demonstrates that Codonopsis species contain mainly xanthones, flavonoids, alkaloids, polyacetylenes, phenylpropanoids, triterpenoids and polysaccharides, which contribute to numerous bioactivities. The major bioactive compounds isolated were used for semi‐synthetic modification to increase the chance to discover lead compound. Conclusions It can be concluded that genus Codonopsis has been used as traditional medicines and food materials around the world over years due to chemical constituents with diverse structural types, exhibiting extensive pharmacological activities in immune system, blood system, cardiovascular system, central nervous system, digestive system, and so forth, with almost no obvious toxicity and side effect. Therefore, Codonopsis can be used as a promising ethnopharmacological plant source.

Limnophila aromatica Crude Extracts as Natural Emulsifiers for Formation and Stabilizing of Oil-in-Water (O/W) Emulsions

This study mainly focused on the emulsifying performance of Limnophila aromatica crude extracts obtained by using different ethanolic aqueous solutions (0, 25, 50, 75, and 99.5% (v/v)). All Limnophila aromatica extracts (LAEs) were able to produce emulsions with a volume mean droplet diameter (d4,3) ranging from 273 to 747 nm, except for LAE-99.5 (3269 nm). Only the emulsion prepared by LAE-75 was stable during seven days of storage, without significantly changing droplet size (479–495 nm). The result showed that all LAEs could reduce interfacial tension varied within 12.5 and 16.1 mN/m at the soybean oil/extracts (1% w/w) interface. Compared to other extracts, LAE-75 did not contain the highest protein, saponin, and phenol content (4.36%, 20.14%, and 11.68%, respectively), but it had the lowest ash content (14.74%). These results indicated that the emulsifying performance of LAEs did not rely only on interfacial tension and/or surface-active compounds. The residual demulsifiers, such as inorganic substances, were also significantly involved in the emulsions’ destabilization. Finally, the emulsion consisting of 0.5% (w/w) LAE-75 and 5% (w/w) soybean oil showed considerable stability during storage up to 30 days at different temperatures (5 or 25 °C). Therefore, Limnophila aromatica extract has a potential application as a new source of natural emulsifier.
