Sanitary landfill site selection using GIS-based on a fuzzy multi-criteria evaluation technique: a case study of the City of Kraljevo, Serbia

Abstract: Adequate disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of Serbia's most complex environmental challenges. The problem is more serious in urban areas, since large amounts of waste are disposed of in locations that do not comply with environmental, technical, and socio-economic standards. Such is the case for the city of Kraljevo, where about 116,000 inhabitants do not have a sanitary landfill facility. This research includes a multi-criteria analysis, conducted with the help of geographic information systems, … Show more

“…The selection of a land ll site is closely related to the slope gradient of the terrain, as it in uences various aspects such as drainage patterns, soil erosion rates, site accessibility, visibility, and protection from prevailing winds (Abdo et al, 2023;Balew et al, 2022;Chabuk et al, 2016;Durlević et al, 2023). On the other hand, steeper areas may not be economically viable due to the need for excessive excavation (Bahrani et al, 2016).…”

“…This type of procedure-multi-criteria analysis-considers various quantitative and qualitative criteria that need to be determined in order to find the best solution. In such situations, decision making is based on proper structuring and explicitly evaluating all criteria using appropriate models and software packages [39,40]. For the purpose of the study, the Best-Worst method (BWM) was used as one of the latest and most reliable multicriteria decision-making models [41].…”
