“…7 Therefore, an alternate PEM is required that can circumvent all these drawbacks and can replace Nafion to make it possible for practical implementation of MFCs. Like the Nafion structure where sulfonic groups help in proton conductivity, many researchers have proposed various sulfonated aromatic polymers such as sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK), 9 poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES), 10 sulfophenylated polyphenylene, 11 sulfonated polyarylene ether ether ketone (SPAEEK), 12 sulfonated poly(aryl ether), 13 sulfonated polyimide (SPI), 14,15 etc., which have less cost and are easy to synthesize. Other polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol), 16 polyhydroxyalkanoates, 17 poly(phenylene)sulfide, 18,19 organic agar, 20 and polystyrene 21 without sulfonic groups have also been successfully used in MFCs.…”
