“…Attempts to create psychometric instruments to assess clients’ sand trays have been unsuccessful (Dale & Wagner, 2003; Matson & Veldorale-Brogan, 2010) in establishing interrater reliability, as these studies have contained poor sample sizes (Dale & Lyddon, 2000). Qualitative case studies have relied heavily on therapist observation of therapy (Cockle, 1993) rather than on experimental research design, therefore, any interpretive approach to sand trays can only be speculative due to the absence of any psychometrically sound assessment measures.
