Sandfly-Borne Viruses of Demonstrated/Relevant Medical Importance

Abstract: Sandflies show distribution in a vast geographical area from Europe to Asia, Africa, Australia, and Central and South America where they can transmit a large number of viruses. Between these viruses, the most important are grouped into the Phlebovirus genus (family Phenuiviridae). Among them, several sandfly-borne phleboviruses cause self-limiting febrile disease (sandfly fever) or central and peripheral nervous system infections. Data concerning the geographic distribution of these phleboviruses has drastical… Show more

“…Another group of tiny flies capable of causing parasitic, bacterial and viral diseases to humans are Sandflies of order Diptera, family Psychodidae (Ayhan & Charrel, 2018). Of the 800 sand fly species distributed in the world, at least 98 are proven vectors of micro-organisms and transmit a number of viruses that cause sandfly fever, Toscana virus infection and Adria virus infection.…”

“…Of the 800 sand fly species distributed in the world, at least 98 are proven vectors of micro-organisms and transmit a number of viruses that cause sandfly fever, Toscana virus infection and Adria virus infection. These infections are caused by the viruses of genus Phlebovirus, family Bunyaviridae and are characterized by clinical symptoms such as fever, headache, malaise, photophobia, myalgia and retroorbital pain (Ayhan & Charrel, 2018) (Horne & Vanlandingham, 2014).…”
