Abstract: Objective The recent refugee crisis has resulted in the largest burden of displacement in history, with the US being the top resettlement country since 1975. Texas welcomed the second most US-bound refugees in 2016, with a large percentage arriving in San Antonio. “… 21 Interestingly we found a much higher proportion of refugees/asylees with allergic rhinitis (45%) compared to that study (7.5%). 21 Additionally, previous work showed allergic rhinitis to be among the top five diagnoses in Syrian refugees living in Turkey. 22 Some groups have postulated that the very little prevalence of allergic rhinitis in these populations is due to the “hygiene hypothesis”—where increased exposure to environmental allergens is a protective factor for allergies, asthma, and eczema.…”

“…A similar result was found in the Iraqi refugee population in Michigan, where 100% of refugees surveyed one year after arrival were covered by Medicaid [32]. Conversely, 86.6% of refugees in San Antonio, Texas did not have any form of health insurance [33]. This variation in health coverage is likely attributable to differences in Medicaid eligibility requirements from state to state [34], with states adopting Medicaid expansion under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, such as Michigan and Connecticut [35], providing increased access to healthcare for refugees in comparison to states that have not adopted the expansion, such as Texas.…”
