SAMU ambulance positioning using MALP model

Abstract: One of the constitutional principles of the public health care system in Brazil is universality, which turns health into a fundamental right and ensures that all citizens shall have access to health service whenever required. The purpose of this study is to assess the positioning of ambulances in Duque de Caxias-RJ, and find new arrangements to maximize the covered population. The configuration of a network that provides such service is indeed significant since small deviations may lead to users' death. Theref… Show more

“…This finding is also suggested in the study by Peyravi et al [112]. However, Lam et al [105] highlight that these types of solutions need the support of both georeferencing [113] and information exchange systems in real-time. Including these two factors increases complexity, partially explaining why most research focuses on static policies.…”

“…Considering better computing capabilities available nowadays, many researchers include more features in the modeling process to obtain more realistic models. In this sense, it is important to highlight the inclusion of stochasticity in demand in [67,81,86,88,89,95,[113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128]. There are different ways to address stochasticity, but one of the prominent research areas is machine learning.…”

“… Data presented in this article would be helpful to OR researchers interested in developing simulation and mathematical programming models for optimizing ambulance deployment and redeployment. Several articles on EMS and ambulance deployment have pointed to a lack of data as the main limitation of applying optimization models [ 4 , 5 ]. Making these data available and accessible would help OR researchers focus on developing their models and improving their performance rather than collecting data to test them.…”

“…Morohosi (2008) used the MALP model to improve ambulance locations in Tokyo, and thus reduce the average distance they travel by 68 percent. Recently, Coelho et al (2017) enhanced the EMS service in Duque de Caxias-RJ in Brazil by re-allocating existing resources using an MALP model.…”
