Sampling Rate of Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS): Influence Factors and Calibration Methods

Abstract: As a passive sampling device, the polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) has the characteristics of simple operation, safety, and reliability for assessing the occurrence and risk of persistent and emerging trace organic pollutants. The POCIS, allowing for the determination of time-weighted average (TWA) concentration of polar organic chemicals, exhibits good application prospects in aquatic environments. Before deploying the device in water, the sampling rate (Rs), which is a key parameter for cha… Show more

“…While in the kinetic (integrative) regime, the mass transfer rate to POCIS receiving phase is linearly proportional to the contaminant's water concentration ). If the sampling rate differs from laboratory determined rate or changes with time due to changes in flow rate, temperature, pH, or biofouling (Wang et al 2020), the sampler-determined water concentration may be inaccurate. However, if exposure conditions are similar at the two stations, a single Rs may be used to determine differences between upstream and downstream concentrations.…”
