The plot size estimation is based on uniformity trials, however little is known about and how the size of uniformity trial affects the estimate of the plot size. That way, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of uniformity trial size on the estimation of plot size in the eggplant crop. Two uniformity trials were performed with the eggplant culture in a plastic tunnel. The fresh mass of fruit and number of fruits were assessed in six harvests, with a seven-day interval between harvests. For each trial (Tunnel 1 and 2), 25 uniformity trials of different sizes were simulated (3, 4, 5, … 28 BEU) per harvest and harvest row (individual and grouped) since they presented heteroscedasticity. For each planned uniformity trial, bootstrap procedure was used to estimate 3,000 plot sizes by the maximum coefficient of variation curvature method. The mean and 95% confidence interval width was calculated by the difference between the 97.5th and 2.5th percentiles. The AIC95% and plot size averages were higher in individual harvests than grouped harvests. As the size of the simulated uniformity trial increased, it was verified a reduction of the AIC95% of the plot size. However, the mean plot size did not change with increasing uniformity trial size. In this way, it is possible to state that the size of the uniformity trial affects accuracy the plot size estimation because trials with few numbers of basic experimental units present high experimental variability and inaccurate estimates.

Proximal remote sensing devices are becoming widely applied in field plant research to estimate biochemical (e.g., pigments or nitrogen) or agronomical (e.g., leaf area, biomass, or yield) parameters as indicators of stress. Non-invasive characterization of plant responses allows for the screening of larger populations faster than conventional procedures which, in addition to requiring more time, either imply the destruction of material or are subjective (e.g., visual ranking). This study explores the comparison of a set of remote sensing devices at single-leaf and whole-canopy levels based on their performance in assessing how the eggplant and its yield responds to grafting as a way to tolerate root-knot nematodes. The results showed that whole-canopy measurements, such as the Green Area (GA) derived from the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images (r = 0.706 and p-value = 0.001**) or the canopy temperature (r = −0.619 and p-value = 0.005**), outperformed single-leaf measurements, such as the leaf chlorophyll content measured by the Dualex (r = 0.422 and p-value = 0.059) assessing yield. Moreover, other parameters, such as the time required to measure each sample or the cost of the sensors, were taken into account in the discussion. In sum, indices derived from the RGB images demonstrated their robust potential for the assessment of crop status as a low-cost alternative to other more expensive and time-consuming devices.

The cultivation of papaya under greenhouse has become recently a profitable alternative for horticultural crops in different regions of the world, among them South East Spain. The objective of this work was to determine the sample size to evaluate fruit quality features in mature fruits of ‘BH-65’ papaya cultivated under greenhouse in Almería (Spain). With this aim, fruits were harvested at stage 2 in July 2013, and at the end of the production cycle in March 2014. On each occasion and when fruits reached maturation phenological stage 5, 26 fruits were evaluated for physical characteristics (weight, length, diameter, cavity width), total soluble solids content, and color attributes of skin and pulp. The optimal sample size was calculated using a deterministic method. The physical parameters and the skin and pulp color attributes of fruits of ‘BH-65’ papaya cultivar present different experimental accuracy among themselves and between harvest seasons, requiring different sample sizes. Higher sample size is required for evaluating fruit weight. 25 fruits were necessary at harvest performed in July, but only 7 fruits in March, considering an error of 15% around the average.
