Von der Uberlegung ausgehend, daB die aromatischen Radikale noch kurzlebiger I) als die aliphatischen sein werden, wurde zum Abfangen derselben in Gestalt metallorganischer Verbindungen das Metall in Dampfforni zur Reaktion gebracht. Dadurch, daB das Metall hierbei einatomig vorliegt, also aus dem Atoniverband des festen Materials herausgelost ist, mu13 die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Verbindungsbildung steigen. Sorgt man auBerdem dafiir, daB der Metalldampf den ganzen Reaktionsraum erfiillt, was bei passenden Stromungsverhaltnissen durch Riickdiffusion erreicht wird, so kann man die durch Pyrolyse gebildeten Radikale praktisch an der Entstehungsstelle abfangenz). Als Metall wurde in erster Linie Quecksilber benutzt . ~--. -I) V e r s u c h e m i t Benzol. Es wurden jeweils bestimmte Mengen Benzol mit ungefahr gleicher Geschwindigkeit durch die Zersetzungszone hindurchgesogen. Zunachst konnte man nach Offnen der Apparatur einen deutlichen Diphenyl-Geruch wahrnehmen. Auf dem Quecksilber, das zur Erzeugung des Metalldampfes diente, hatte sich eine gelbliche Masse abgesetzt, die aus hoheren Kondensationsprodukten des Phenyl-Radikals zu bestehen schien. I n den Kiihlfallen zeigte sich unmittelbar nach Entfernung der niit fliissiger Luft gefullten Weinhold-Gefal3e ein gelblich-braunes Produkt, nianchmal niit einem ins Rotliche gehenden Ton, das in dem unzersetzt iibergegangenen, gefrorenen Benzol fein verteilt eingebettet war. Bei allmahlich ansteigender Temperatur anderte sich wahrend des Schmelzens des Benzols plotzlich die Farbe nach Grau bis Schwarz, und als alles geschmolzen war, blieb an der Glaswandung ein dunner Spiegel, am Boden des GefaBes ein Niederschlag von metallischem Quecksilber 3, zuriick.Diese Erscheinungen deuten auf die intermediare Bildung einer Quecksilberverbindung R,Hg, hin, die sich dann bei Zimmertemperatur nach dem Schema R,Hg, -+ RzHg + Hg unter hletallabscheidung zersetzt. Die Beobachtung steht nicht in1 Gegensatz zu bekannten Tatsachen. I n der aliphatischen Reihe gelang es schon vor vielen Jahren, durch Reduktion geniischter Organoquecksilbersalze R H g S derartige Verbindungen R,Hg, abzuscheiden, die von dunkler Farbe waren und sich bald in R,Hg und freies Hg zersetzten*). F. 0. Rices) konlite bei seinen Versuchen Organoquecksilberverbindungen beobachtenuber deren Aussehen er allerdings nichts aussagt -, die sich ebenfalls als nicht temperaturbestandig erwiesen. Ilr schreibt diesen Verbindungen, z. B. im Falle des Methans als Ausgangssubstanz, die Formel (CH, .Hg), zu.Es galt nun, die entstandene, vollkomiiien farblose und klare Benzollosung auf das Vorhandensein von nietallorganischen Verbindungen zii l) I:.
