Salt-induced accumulation of glycine betaine is inhibited by high light in durum wheat

Abstract: In this study, we determined the effects of both salinity and high light on the metabolism of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf. cv. Ofanto) seedlings, with a special emphasis on the potential role of glycine betaine in their protection. Unexpectedly, it appears that high light treatment inhibits the synthesis of glycine betaine, even in the presence of salt stress. Additional solutes such as sugars and especially amino acids could partially compensate for the decrease in its synthesis upon exposure to high lig… Show more

“…Ascorbic acid (ASCAc), dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG) were extracted as described by Annunziata et al (2012) and Woodrow et al (2012) and determined according to Queval and Noctor (2007). Malondialdehyde was assayed according to Carillo et al (2011). Contribution of metabolites and ions to osmolality was calculated according to Cuin et al (2009) and Puniran-Hartley et al (2014).…”

“…Under optimal conditions, the nodal buds sprout up to 70-80 % but suboptimal conditions decline the sprouting potential to as low as 20 % (Wahid et al 1997;Lakshmanan et al 2005;Carillo et al 2011). Since sugarcane buds are vegetative propagules, there is a strong need to determine the physiological and developmental basis of declined bud sprouting and find strategies to improve sugarcane stand per unit area.…”

“…In this way, it is beneficial to enhance protection without the costs associated with constitutive expression of stress-related genes (Baldwin et al 2006;Hulten et al 2006;Annicchiarico et al 2015). Osmolytes like proline and GB, by virtue of stress-combating actions, are strong candidates for priming the plants against abiotic stresses (Carillo et al 2011).…”
