Salt- and osmotic stress-induced choline monooxygenase expression in Kochia scoparia is ABA-independent

Abstract: Choline monooxygenase (CMO) is the first regulatory enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway for glycine betaine, an effective osmoprotectant in Kochia scoparia, a highly drought-and salt-tolerant species. In seedlings, CMO transcript levels are rapidly increased in response to both NaCl and osmotic stress treatments. The mRNA level in shoots was substantially higher than in roots. The rapid induction seen in whole plants was in contrast to the apparent downregulation observed in suspension-cultured K. scoparia cell… Show more

“…Besides of these genes, many other genes also harbor ABA-responsive element, but they are controlled by an ABA-independent cascade ( Shinozaki et al, 2003 ). In glycinebetaine biosynthesis, the expression of CMO and BADH has also been suggested as ABA-independent, respectively ( Ishitani et al, 1995 ; Kalinina et al, 2012 ). In this study, we find that the promoter of ClBADH contains an LTR element ( Supplementary Table S5 ), which is one of the major CREs in ABA-independent gene expression ( Yamaguchi-Shinozaki and Shinozaki, 2005 ).…”

“…ABA is a typical plant hormone associated with abiotic stress. It plays an important role in the responses to external stress signals to promote the expression of resistance-related genes [ 34 , 35 , 36 ] and regulate stomatal closure to limit water loss [ 37 ], which helps plants adapt to drought stress [ 37 , 38 ] and salt stress [ 37 , 39 , 40 ]. MtCMFs have been shown to regulate drought and salt stress either through ABA-dependent or ABA-independent mechanisms [ 10 ].…”

“…Accordingly, Ah24 homologs are found in Salicornia europaea , an halophyte that is widely distributed in coastal and inland salt marshes around the world (Fan et al, 2013 ; Ma et al, 2013 ) and in various Atriplex species, many of which are used for the remediation of saline or heavy-metal contaminated soils (Kachout et al, 2010 and references therein). It is also present in exceptionally stress tolerant plants such as Kochia scoparia (Kalinina et al, 2012 and references therein), Spergularia media (syn. S. maritima ) (Flowers and Colmer, 2008 ), and Dianthus sp.…”
