Salmonellosis is the second most reported gastrointestinal infection in humans after campylobacteriosis and a common cause of foodborne outbreaks in the European Union (EU). In addition to consumption of contaminated animal-based foods, such as poultry, beef and eggs, pork is an important source of human salmonellosis outbreaks; therefore, Salmonella (S.) control should start in the early stages of pig production. To be able to implement effective control measures to reduce the risk of pigs being infected by Salmonella, it is important to identify the serovars circulating on farm within the different stages of production, including as early as sow and piglet breeding. The aim of the present study was to assess the Salmonella status of sow farms either producing their own finishers or delivering piglets to fattening farms with a known high serological prevalence identified within the QS Salmonella monitoring system. Overall, 97 (92.4%) of 105 investigated piglet-producing farms across Germany tested positive in at least one sample. Salmonella was detected in 38.2% of the sock and 27.1% of the environmental swab samples. S. Typhimurium was the most frequent serovar. In conclusion, sock and environmental swab samples are well suited for non-invasive Salmonella detection in different production units in farrowing farms. To establish a holistic Salmonella control program, all age classes of pig production should be sampled to enable intervention and implementation of countermeasures at an early stage if necessary.

Antibiotics cause negative impacts on the ecosystem and people‘s health, and it is imperative to reduce antibiotic residuum in a green and sustainable way. There has been a broad application of photocatalytic technology in the sewage treatment field. Compared with metal oxides, graphite carbon nitride, as an n‐type non‐metallic semiconducting polymer, has an applicable energy gap, simple preparation and easily accessible. Yet the g‐C3N4 of simple preparation tends to have some crucial weaknesses like rapid charge carrier recombination, underutilization of the visible spectrum and incomplete mineralization, which severely confine its farther application. Element doping modification enormously improves the separation of g‐C3N4 photogenic hole‐charge, which is applied to the removal of antibiotics in wastewater. The doping modification of g‐C3N4‐based semiconductor photocatalysts and research progress in the photocatalytic degradation of various antibiotics (sulfonamides, β‐lactam, quinolones, tetracycline) in water are reviewed in this paper, and the preparation of g‐C3N4, the sorts and principles of elemental doping are investigated, with emphasis on the application of g‐C3N4 towards the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, and the existing problems and challenges in this field are put forward.

Facial Preparation of Cyclometalated Iridium (III) Nanowires as Highly Efficient Electrochemiluminescence Luminophores for Biosensing

In this study, highly efficient ECL luminophores composed of iridium complex-based nanowires (Ir–NCDs) were synthesized via covalently linking bis(2-phenylpyridine)-(4-carboxypropyl-2,2′-bipyridyl) iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate with nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs). The ECL intensity of the nanowires showed a five-fold increase in ECL intensity compared with the iridium complex monomer under the same experimental conditions. A label-free ECL biosensing platform based on Ir–NCDs was established for Salmonella enteritidis (SE) detection. The ECL signal was quenched linearly in the range of 102–108 CFU/mL for SE with a detection limit of 102 CFU/mL. Moreover, the relative standard deviations (RSD) of the stability within and between batches were 0.98% and 3.9%, respectively. In addition, the proposed sensor showed high sensitivity, selectivity and stability towards SE in sheep feces samples with satisfactory results. In summary, the excellent ECL efficiency of Ir–NCDs demonstrates the prospects for Ir(III) complexes in bioanalytical applications.
