The oldest human remains known from Cyprus, dating back to the 8th millennium cal. BC, were uncovered at ParekkJisha-Shillourokambos, in the southern coastal zone of the island, and at the western site ofKissonerga-MylouthJda. Various mortuary practices including collective and single burials as well as primary and secon dary deposits have been recognized. Other burials dating to the 8th millennium were found atKalavasos-Tenta, in southern Cyprus. Many primary burials were also discovered at the later sites (7th -early 6th millennium cal. BC) ofKhirokitia Vouni, not far from Kalavasos-Tenta, and at Cap Andreas-Kastros in north-eastern Cyprus. The comparison between funerary practices at the various Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites (8th and 7th -early 6th millennia) reveals an evolution to primary, single burials of both adults and subadults. Furthermore, the com parisons of funerary practices observed at Cypriot sites dating back to the 8th millennium with those described for the PPNB mainland sites highlight ÖZET Kıbrıs'ta bilinen en eski insan kakntdan adarım güney layı bölgesindeki, MÖ 8. binyda (cal BC) tarihlenen Parekkksha-ShiHourokambos'ta ve batıdaki bir diğer yerleşim oları Kissonerga-Mylouthkia 'da ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Toplu ve tekli mezar larla birlikte, birincil ve ddrvcd birikintileri içeren çeşitli ölü gömme uygulamalan bulunmaktadır. Burdarmyamsıra Güney Kıbrıs'ta Kalavasos-Tenta'da 8. binyda tarihlenen mezarlar bulunmuştur. Ayrıca Kalavasos-Tenta'dan fazla uzak olma yan Khirokitia Vounive Kuzeydoğu Kıbrıs'taki Cap Andreas-Kastros 'da bulunan, MÖ 7. bin ve 6. birrydm başlarına (kal BC) tarihknenyerieşimkrde birçokbirinedmezaraçığa çıkarılmıştır. Çeşidi Çanak ÇömleksizNeolitikyerleşmlerdeki . bin ve 6. biriydin başlan) ölü gömme uygulamalarının karşılaştırılması, hem erişkin hem de erişkin olmayan bireyler için birincil tekli gömmelere doğru bir gelişimi ortaya /aymaktadır. Ayrıca, MÖ 8. binyda tarihlenen Kıbrıs yerleşimlerin de gözlenen ölü gömme uygulamalarının anakaradaki PPNB yerleşimlerinde tanımlanmış olanlarla karşılaştırılması, bir kaç ortak noktayı ve yalnızca Kıbrıs'a özgü uygulamalan ortaya koyması açısından önem taşımaktadır.

Remains of 15 hominids were recovered within a Mousterian archaeological context in the cave of Qafzeh, Israel. Dated to ca. 95 kyr BP, this skeletal material has been crucial for understanding biological, chronological, and cultural aspects of anatomically modern ancient Homo sapiens. The high proportion of children (N = 8) in Qafzeh Cave is unique among Middle Palaeolithic sites and encourages the search for skeletal evidence of disease and trauma. We report on the case of one child, Qafzeh 12, ca. 3 years old (according to modern human reference standards), who manifests some outstanding skeletal abnormalities that indicate hydrocephalus.

The paper deals with the issue of perception of the youngest children in ancient society in the context of selected written and archaeological sources in the wider territory of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The nature of historical sources and their fragmentation greatly complicate their interpretation. In this respect, archaeological sources also do not offer a clear answer as they show a high variability in the treatment of the remains of the youngest children. Nevertheless, the paper seeks to oppose the entirely negative perception of children widespread in the scientific literature that discusses mainly the works of philosophers, in which the youngest children are presented as lower beings similar to animals. Manifestations of parental love are documented primarily by private correspondence concerning the death of children, and also recorded on epigraphic monuments, in literary works and mythological stories. From the archaeological perspective, regular graves of the youngest children testify to the existence of care and love of the parents, whose manifestations, however, were subject to social norms.
