Salivary microRNAs as new molecular markers in cleft lip and palate: a new frontier in molecular medicine

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding RNAs of about twenty-two nucleotides that regulate gene expression through post-transcriptional control. The purpose of the present study was to identify and describe the salivary miRNAs in cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients comparing them with a control healthy group. Twelve patients (mean age 11.9 ± 2.42 years; 6M/6F) formed the study group. The control group was created selecting twelve healthy subjects matched for age and sex with study group. We recorded diffe… Show more

“…Nowadays, the growing threat of microbial resistance against traditional antibiotics in oral disease has prompted the mandatory development of alternative therapies, especially against bacterial strains showing resistance to one or more antibiotics [60,61]. In this article, silver NPs (AgNPs) were successfully prepared using hydrazine and were further modified by a coating of indolicidin, a well-known AMP.…”

“…Moreover, in extraction treatments, the arch width reduction creates unaesthetic triangles at the corners of the mouth with negative spaces lateral to the buccal segments [32] and undesirable dental retraction; worsening facial aesthetics are possible [6]. Thus, the trend of nonextraction treatment has changed due to the new aesthetic concepts of facial soft-tissue profile in orthodontics [32][33][34][35][36]. The present case shows a patient with a severe mandibular crowding, treated without extractions and with a postretention long-term stability (10-year follow-up).…”

“…Many different microRNAs have been identified to temporally and spatially regulate morphogens and transcription factors during palatogenesis (Eberhart et al, 2008;Seelan et al, 2014;Ding et al, 2016;Reiss and Bhakdi, 2017;Schoen et al, 2017). Not surprisingly, microRNAs have been suggested as be new targets for investigating in CL/P studies (Li et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2013Wang et al, , 2017Ma et al, 2014;Gao et al, 2015;Li D. et al, 2016;Li J. et al, 2016;Schoen et al, 2017Schoen et al, , 2018Chen et al, 2018;Grassia et al, 2018;Pan et al, 2018;Suzuki et al, 2018;Wu N. et al, 2018;Xu M. et al, 2018).…”
