Salivary immunoglobulins in children with asthma

Abstract: Whole saliva of 30 children with extrinsic asthma was analyzed for IgA, IgG and IgE. Salivary albumin concentrations were also determined. The values were compared with those obtained from matched healthy controls. The salivary IgG, IgA and albumin values did not differ from their healthy controls. The IgE concentrations of the asthmatic children, however, were significantly higher. Those children who had recently received hyposensitization therapy showed slightly elevated values of IgE in their saliva. The di… Show more

“…IgE was detected only in a low concentration (0.5 U/ml) in one patient in both the periodontitis and control groups, whereas in the asthma group IgE was detected in 12 patients. These results support the findings obtained in the study on asthmatic children, though the mean concentration and range of IgE were greater in children with asthma (Hyyppa 1980). The level of serum IgE in a normal, healthy population of adults is lower than in children.…”

“…Previous studies have showti that children with asthma had more gingivitis than heaithy controls without differences in the amount of dental ptaque . Instead an increase in the salivary IgE values of these children was observed (Hyyppa 1980). IgE-mediated allergic reactions are typical in asthma, and thus the increase in salivary IgE values could reflect the extent of these reactions on the oraJ mucosa.…”

“…Asthmatic patients have elevated values of IgE in their whole saliva and in gingival tissue (Hyyppä 1984). Children with allergic asthma showed high salivary IgE concentrations and signs of more severe gingival inflammation than their healthy controls (Hyyppä et al 1979, Hyyppä 1980). Interleukin‐4 plays a crucial role in asthma, due to its action on B cells to switch the Ig isotype from IgM to IgE and to the maturation of T‐helper cells to the Th2 phenotypes (Noguchi et al 1998, Hijazi & Haider 2000).…”

“…The IgE concentration increases very frequently in the serum of patients with allergic diseases and, ac-\ cording to some authors [1,2], also in the saliva and sputum in asthmatic patients. Besides, severe IgE-mediated allergy to surgical gloves has been reported [3].…”
