Salivary duct carcinoma cytologically diagnosed distinctly from salivary gland carcinomas with squamous differentiation

Abstract: It has been difficult cytologically to distinguish salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) from high-grade carcinoma. We investigated the microscopic cytological findings, morphometric image analyses, and immunohistochemical features of SDC, focusing on how we achieved an accurate differential diagnosis distinguishing SDC from salivary gland carcinomas with squamous differentiation. Immunohistochemical staining was performed for androgen receptor (AR), gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 (GCDFP15), mammaglobin, human … Show more

“…42,43 Clinical features Men are more likely (by a factor of three) to receive a diagnosis of salivary duct carcinoma than women, and both sexes present in the fifth to sixth decade. 3,6,12,15 More than a quarter of patients will present with facial nerve dysfunction or paralysis, and more than a third have palpable cervical lymphadenopathy, highlighting the aggressive behaviour of this tumour.…”

“…The numerous morphometric studies were conducted on digitalized pictures of the cytological and histological samples of different organs and tumors, in human and veterinary medicine . The literature describes a number of nuclear and cellular morphometric parameters, which are shown to be valuable in differentiating malignant cells from the cells of benign tumors …”

“…The field of nuclear cell morphometry is an innovative area of study which has had a little evaluation to date in the area of parotid gland tumor aspirates cytology. In the literature, there is only a few works on digital morphometric analysis of cytological smears of parotid gland tumors, with a small number of morphometric parameters that were used in this studies . In our opinion, it is due to the lack of its application in routine clinical setting.…”
