Saliva as a sampling source for the detection of leukemic fusion transcripts

Abstract: BackgroundSaliva has long been used as a sampling source for clinical diagnosis of oral disease such as oral squamous cell carcinoma, or therapeutic drug monitoring. The aims of this study was to ascertain if saliva RNA could be stored at room temperature and to study if saliva could be a convenient source for fusion transcripts in leukemic patients.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional diagnostic study. We first developed a Saliva RNA tube for stable storage of whole saliva RNA at room temperature. Then we detecte… Show more

“…Such associations might allow for the potential use of saliva to detect minimal residual disease in leukaemia. 53 Based on recent studies, it has been proposed that salivary trehalose, which could be detected by some cell-based extended gate ion-sensitive field-effect transistor biosensors, might provide a sensitive and direct way to screen for Alzheimer's disease. 54 Wilson's disease is a rare inherited disorder of copper metabolism and is characterized by hepatic, neurological and psychiatric symptoms.…”

“…A genomic study by Chen et al [ 44 ] analysed 30 common fusion gene transcripts that are the hallmark of leukaemia (i.e., BCR - ABL among others) in the saliva samples of seven leukemic patients and 20 healthy individuals. The results showed concordance between the fusion genes detected in the saliva samples with those in the bone marrow.…”

“…(18). So saliva is termed as liquid biopsies that hold great clinical potential (17), as diagnostics tools of their noninvasive nature allows for quick, easy of accessibility (transport and storage), safe handling, economical, and repeat sampling sorts (19), that permit their utilizing in screening programs and for the close observing of treatment response and disease progression, letting for earlier intervention and dynamic treatment administration (17,20). Also it presents less risk of infection and accurate.…”
